What was wrong

Defect

Helmet City, Inc. (HCI) is recalling certain model 115 German helmets, size XL, manufactured from April 1, 2014, through April 30, 2014. During a load situation such as during a crash, the straps that secure the affected helmets may stretch excessively. As such, these helmets fail to comply with the retention requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 218, "Motorcycle Helmets."

Risk

If the helmet straps stretch significantly in the event of a crash, the helmet may not remain secured to the user's head increasing their risk of injury.

Manufacturer remedy

HCI will notify owners and will replace the model 115 helmets with a model 100 helmet, free of charge. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact HCI customer service at 1-888-550-3731. HCI's number for this recall is 115 XL (Apr 2014).
